GPS End-of-Week Rollover requires software update
All users of old iPhones or iPads (iPhone 5 / iPad 4th generation and older) will have time until 2 November to update their devices with an update that still allows precise GPS positioning and correct date and time information.
Wifi, email, iCloud and App Store, among others, are based on these functions on iPhone5. As of November 3, wireless software updates and iCloud backups will no longer be possible. According to Apple, backups can then only be created and restored with a Mac or PC to perform the update – which is much more time-consuming.
Verify the iOS version
The updated version for iPhone 5 and iPad (4th generation) Wifi + Cellular is iOS 10.3.4, for iPhone 4s, iPad mini (1st generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + Cellular (only CDMA) Models) and iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular – iOS 9.3.6. Lower versions should be updated no later than Saturday, November 2nd.
The background to the necessary updates is the so-called GPS end-of-week rollover. After 1,024 weeks, the week counter returns from the binary value 1111111111 to 0000000000 . The firmware of current systems considers this return – obsolete systems sometimes require updates.
